The Earth Champions Quest consists of three phases:
Call for action
“People have competitions for football, chess and tennis, but isn’t it time to involve the community in participating in a competition to improve and sustain their local environment?”
Our initiatives are designed to create a climate of hope for the world’s youth through the recognition and promotion of the sustainable practices that are being quietly introduced in the communities of the world. The Earth Champions™ Quest recognises people, companies and governments who have contributed towards creating a sustainable future for the planet. Extensive media coverage will be used to engage the ‘buy in of the people’ and encourage public participation – It is the People’s Choice.
The public are invited to nominate their best, most extraordinary and innovative environmental solutions in the areas of:
These nominees are then subject to interviews, and evaluation by an expert judging panel, consisting of some of the world’s key environmental thinkers.
Evaluation
A distinguished, independent judging panel comprising representatives from the United Nations Environment Program, IUCN and the Nobel Laureates is established for the evaluation of the nominations of each Quest. The Panel is Chaired by Sir Crispin Tickell, and the criteria are based on the United Nations Best Practice Protocols. Assessments are also made using Agenda 21 and triple bottom line parameters.
There are no losers in the competition as all information will be recorded in the Knowledge Pond, an online library, for all to see and utilise.
Celebration
The Foundation has permission from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to showcase the Outstanding Earth Champions for one day, the week prior to the start of the Summer Olympics every four years, when the world media are relaying stories to approximately three billion people.
The Earth Champions and their ideas are presented and celebrated in front of an international audience, in an iconic location in the host city. It is an event for the community to celebrate their chosen Champions and the new environmental standards they are achieving.
In 2012, the London Quest will see the Earth Champions from four different countries – Australia, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and London – come together to celebration the global community’s environmental progress and ideas!
